Application
Brazing
Brazing uses heat and a filler metal (alloy) to join metals. Once melted, the alloy flows between close-fitting base metals (the pieces being joined) by capillary action. This molten filler alloy interacts with a thin layer of the base metal to form a strong, leak-proof joint.



Hardening
Hardening uses heat and rapid cooling (quenching) to increase the hardness, strength and/or durability of steel. Heating steel or iron above their upper critical temperature, modifies the crystal structure of the metal to a form called Austenite. With this atomic arrangement the carbon can then freely migrate a new location.
When hardening, the aim is to quickly quenching the Austenite, thus trapping  the carbon atoms in their new positions in the crystalline structure called Martensite which is extremely hard.
